In this first podcast we speak with Joanne McEwan. Joanne is a Chief Inspector in Police Scotland who began her policing career in 2000 with then Fife Constabulary and has performed a range of policing roles including response and community policing, public protection, major investigations, event command and corporate functions. Joanne is also Chair of the newly launched SWDF Women of Colour in Policing Sub Committee. Established in 2023 the committee seeks to collaborate with internal and external partners, diversity staff associations and allies to explore the complex space of intersectionality and to enhance the visibility, voice, representation and experience of women of colour in policing.

Rebecca is a serving officer in Fife working as the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion officer in the Divisional Coordination Unit. She has previously worked in public protection and responsible policing. Rebecca talks about her route into policing, her determination, resilience, her passion for EDI and its importance for policing and our communities and how she became a proud role model.

In this podcast, Jenni Stuart and Joanne McEwan sit down with Jess Panesar, a Service Centre Advisor currently working within Contact, Command and Control Division. Jess is Chair of the Sikh Police Association and a member of the SWDF Women of Colour in Policing Sub Committee. Established in 2023 the subcommittee seeks to collaborate with internal and external partners, diversity staff associations and allies to explore the complex space of intersectionality and to enhance the visibility, voice, representation and experience of women of colour in policing.

In the penultimate episode of our special Breaking Barriers podcast series for International Women’s Day, we hear from Deputy Commissioner Tania Kura from New Zealand Police. In a truly international podcast episode, Kayleigh Marshall, the Deputy chair of our Comms and Events sub-committee interviewed Deputy Commissioner Kura when she was visiting New Zealand. Deputy Commissioner Kura joined New Zealand police in 1987 and is an inspiration, and in every sense of the word a trailblazer. In a wide ranging and fascinating episode she talks about challenging poor behaviour, pushing boundaries and challenging the status quo and how you can tell a lot about an organisation by the way it deals with mistakes.
